The major finding of this analysis of civil and criminal justice expenditures is that during fiscal year 1982 less than 3 percent of all Federal, State, and local government spending was for civil and criminal justice activities.
Abstract
Slightly over half this expenditure was for police protection, one-fourth was for correctional programs, and one-fifth was for courts and other legal activities. The report breaks down expenditures by national, State, and local jurisdictions and provides data on employment and per capita spending. It also estimates per capita spending on criminal and civil justice for each State. From 1980 to 1982, total police expenditures increased by 23 percent and corrections by 30 percent. These increases varied among the three levels of government, with the Federal Government experiencing the least growth. Data for this analysis were compiled by the U.S. Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Justice Statistics using existing available sources and data from the Census Bureau's 1982 Census of Governments. The report explains that the data are preliminary and subject to change. Tables and 7 references.
