Abstract
THE EDNA MCCONNELL CLARK FOUNDATION IS A GRANTMAKING ORGANIZATION LOCATED IN NEW YORK CITY. IN THE FIELD OF JUSTICE, THE FOUNDATION HAS ISSUED GRANTS TOTALING $1,509,000 TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF PERSONS INSTITUTIONALIZED IN PENAL AND MENTAL FACILITIES AND TO ASSIST IN THEIR INTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY, TO AID THE INDIGENT THROUGH THE PROVISION OF ADEQUATE LEGAL SERVICES, AND TO STRENGTHEN THE ABILITY OF THE RURAL POOR TO FIND AND KEEP USEFUL EMPLOYMENT. THE FOUNDATION HAS HELPED LAWYERS TO DEFINE AND CARRY OUT THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES IN ASSURING THE RIGHTS OF PRISON INMATES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONALIZED PERSONS. FOR EXAMPLE, A FOUNDATION GRANT AIDED THE NATIONAL PRISON PROJECT, WHICH HANDLED THE CASE OF PRISONERS WHO HAD BEEN SUBJECTED TO CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT IN AN ALABAMA PENITENTIARY. WORKING THROUGH THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION, THE FOUNDATION HAS PROVIDED FUNDS TO STATE AND LOCAL BAR ASSOCIATIONS FOR CORRECTIONS AND MENTAL HEALTH REFORM PROJECTS. THESE PROJECTS HAVE INCLUDED PARALEGAL TRAINING FOR PRISON INMATES. THE FOUNDATION ALSO SUPPORTED AN AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION STUDY OF THE LEGAL NEEDS OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC, AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF SMALLER PROJECTS AIMED AT IMPROVING ACCESS FOR THE DISADVANTAGED TO LEGAL SERVICES.
