Abstract
THE DIRECTORY WAS COMPILED TO ASSIST THOSE REGIONS IN THE PROCESS OF BEGINNING OR REEVALUATING THEIR COMMITMENTS TO THE GOALS OF (1) REMOVING STATUS OFFENDERS FROM THE JURISDICTION OF THE COURTS, (2) SUPPORTING A SYSTEM OF SENTENCING FOR JUVENILES PROPORTIONAL TO THE SEVERITY OF THEIR CRIMES, (3) INSURING THAT SENTENCES FOR JUVENILES DO NOT EXCEED COMPARABLE ADULT CASES, (4) PROMOTING THE WELFARE AND REHABILITATION OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE COURT THROUGH SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION, AND (5) SUPPORTING A SYSTEM OF SOCIAL SERVICES FOR CHILDREN IN NEED OF SUPERVISION OR WHO HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED OR ABUSED. PROJECTS REPRESENT VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS THAT WERE DEVELOPED SINCE 1975 BY NCJW MEMBERS TO ADDRESS IDENTIFIED NEEDS OF CHILDREN AND TO FILL IN SERVICE DELIVERY GAPS, PROJECTS THAT INVOLVE DIRECT SERVICE, ADVOCACY, AND PUBLIC EDUCATION. FOR EACH PROJECT, NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF CONTACT PEOPLE ARE GIVEN, TOGETHER WITH A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT. THE DIRECTORY LISTS PROJECTS BY GEOGRAPHIC DISTRICTS--NORTHEASTERN, MID-ATLANTIC, CENTRAL, SOUTHERN, AND WESTERN. AN INDEX OF THE PROJECTS IS ARRANGED BY TYPE OF ACTIVITY OR SUBJECT. NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF SECTION MEMBERS ARE PROVIDED ALONG WITH DIRECTIONS FOR CONTACTING THE JUSTICE FOR CHILDREN TASK FORCE AND THE NATIONAL OFFICE COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES DEPARTMENT FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.
