THIS PAPER INVESTIGATES THE DEGREE TO WHICH JURORS ARE WILLING TO SERVE BY EXAMINING THE REACTIONS OF A SAMPLE OF CITIZENS FOLLOWING THEIR ACTUAL SELECTION AS VENIREMEN.
Abstract
THE STUDY ADDRESSED THE FOLLOWING: THE ATTITUDES OF PEOPLE WHEN ASKED TO SERVE ON JURIES, THE NUMBER WHO ARE UNWILLING TO SERVE, AND THE REASONS THOSE SELECTED FOR SERVICE FAIL TO DO SO. WHILE THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY IS LIMITED TO AN INQUIRY OF THE DEGREE OF PUBLIC WILLINGNESS TO SERVE ON A JURY, IT EXAMINES SOME POSSIBLE IMPLICATIONS WHICH PUBLIC RESISTANCE TO JURY DUTY MAY HAVE ON THE INSTITUTION ITSELF, AS WELL AS ON THE QUALITY OF JUSTICE IN THE UNITED STATES.
