DISCUSSION OF THE INSUFFICIENT SALARY/CONTINUING INFLATION/ULTIMATE RESIGNATION PLIGHT CONFRONTING THE FEDERAL AND STATE JUDICIARY.
Abstract
STATE ATTEPMTS (BOTH SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL) TO INCREASE JUDICIAL PAY LEVELS ARE DESCRIBED, INCLUDING COST-OF-LIVING CLAUSES, LOCAL SALARY SUPPLEMENTS, ACROSSTHE-BOARD PAY INCREASES, AND THE WORK OF STATE COMPENSATION COMMISSIONS. THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT LOW JUDICIAL SALARIES AT BOTH THE FEDERAL AND STATE LEVELS ARE CAUSING QUALIFIED JUDGES TO LEAVE THE BENCH FOR MORE LUCRATIVE JOBS IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR AND ARE HAMPERING EFFORTS TO ATTRACT 'TOP FLIGHT' LAWYERS TO THE BENCH.
