This report presents statistics on the cases filed, disposed, and pending in Vermont's courts during the year ending June 30, 1996.
Abstract
The data cover the State Supreme Court, superior courts, district courts, family courts, the Vermont Traffic and Municipal Ordinance Bureau, the environmental court, and probate courts. Filings in Vermont's Superior court increased by 3 percent during fiscal year 1996, reversing a 6-year trend. Filings in the environmental court more than doubled. The number of cases filed in probate court also increased. All other courts reported decreased filings, ranging from a 2.9- percent decline in district court cases to an 11.4-percent reduction in traffic cases. The State Supreme Court closed 694 cases. The superior courts experienced 6,839 new filings and closed 6,874 cases. The district courts experienced 31,698 case filings. The courts closed 16,501 criminal cases, while the pending caseload increased by 11 percent to 8,679. A total of 65,959 traffic complaints and 1,394 municipal ordinance complaints were filed at the Vermont Traffic and Municipal Ordinance Bureau. Tables
