THE COLLECTION OF JOB AND OCCUPATIONAL INFORMATION IS DESCRIBED. VARIOUS STRUCTURES WHICH MAY BE REVEALED BY SUCH ANALYSIS ARE LISTED AND THE USE OF THIS DATA TO SET APTITUDE REQUIREMENTS AND COMPENSATION IS EXPLAINED.
Abstract
THE DESCRIPTION OF BASIC JOB ANALYSIS INFORMATION COVERS THE COLLECTION OF DATA REGARDING WORK ACTIVITIES; MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND WORK AIDS USED; JOB-RELATED TANGIBLES AND INTANGIBLES; WORK PERFORMANCE; JOB CONTEXT; AND PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS. THE FORM IN WHICH THE INFORMATION IS COLLECTED, METHODS OF COLLECTION, AND PERSONS AND DEVICES WHICH CAN BE USED TO COLLECT DATA ARE DESCRIBED. THE MANY TECHNIQUES USED FOR TASK DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS ARE REVIEWED. THE NATURE AND USE OF JOB INVENTORIES ARE COVERED, AND TECHNIQUES TO MAKE SUCH INVENTORIES MORE RELIABLE ARE GIVEN. THEN THE DEVELOPMENT OF QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE JOB DESCRIPTIONS IS EXPLAINED AND THE USE OF SUCH DESCRIPTIONS TO SET PERSONNEL STANDARDS, ESTABLISH HIRING AND TRAINING PROCEDURES, AND SET WAGE AND SALARY RATES IS ILLUSTRATED. JOB TYPES, JOB FAMILIES, AND JOB INTERRELATIONSHIPS ARE CONSIDERED, ALONG WITH THE EXISTING JOB CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPED BY THE U.S. BUREAU OF THE CENSUS AND THE UNITED STATES TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT SERVICE ('DICTIONARY OF OCCUPATIONAL TITLES'). THE USE OF JOB CLASSIFICATION DATA FOR VOCATIONAL COUNSELING IS ALSO REVIEWED. NUMEROUS TABLES, GRAPHS, AND CASE EXAMPLES ARE INCLUDED. REFERENCES ARE APPENDED. (GLR)
