This article presents the responses of several corrections managers to a letter from the managing editor of American Jails regarding their use of jail statistics and their opinions on further statistics they believe are needed.
Abstract
The commander of the Multnomah County (Oreg.) Correctional Facility reported that the county issues a monthly and annual jail population reports and data in other reports. Information desired included booking trends compared with population, crime statistics, sworn officers making arrests in the jurisdiction, prosecution rates, and time frames for prosecution, as well as information on changes in sentencing patterns, laws, and other factors that affect jail population. Uniform methods of defining recidivism and cost per inmate were also requested. The director of the Beaufort County (S.C.) Detention Center reported that the State jail administrators' association hired an executive director and hopes that annual statistical information will be compiled. The County produces monthly and annual statistical reports. Information on the costs of private corrections per meal and per day would be desirable. An annual inspection report indicates each facility's degree of compliance with State jail standards. The criminal justice coordinator of the Orange County (Fla.) Corrections Division reported that the State publishes a monthly report on jail populations. Information desired includes vendor lists of services, products, costs, and users; comparative information on compliance with State standards; and standard formulas for developing statistical information.
