Abstract
Data were collected from 339 inmates serving sentences in 3 New Jersey prisons. Inmates were given an interview schedule containing seven instruments which included over 350 questions. Data suggest that the deinstitutionalization movement, marked by strict requirements for hospitalization in mental hospitals, and less onerous criteria for fitness to be discharged, has created a segment of the prison population who are becoming an ever increasing burden on jails. 44 references.
