This article describes the development and format for jail officer training in Kansas.
Abstract
In January 1989, the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services in cooperation with the Kansas Department of Corrections mounted a program for training local jail officers. An assessment was conducted to determine the jail officer training already available and the training needs as determined by jail personnel. Assessment results were tabulated by training topic. The tabulations were further subdivided by geographic area. An advisory committee reviewed assessment results and recommended training topics, trainers, and training site locations. A total of 19 training sessions were held between May 30, 1989, and September 1, 1989. The workshops were 7 hours long. The training focused on skills for managing jail daily operations, interpersonal skills, crisis intervention, and actions to decrease the likelihood of a liability suit from jail officer actions. A second round of 21 sessions of training for jail officers began December 15, 1989 and will continue until September 1, 1990. Since the first round of workshops was not well attended, the second round of training sessions will be extended over a longer period and will be rotated between the western half of the State and the eastern half. 4 footnotes
