Cermak Health Services, an agency within the Cook County, Illinois, Bureau of Health, provides onsite medical, dental, psychiatric, and substance abuse services to detainees in the Cook County Department of Corrections.
Abstract
Most health services are provided in an ambulatory care setting in each division housing detainees. Detainees who require hospitalization are sent to the Cook County Hospital. Cermak is primarily responsible for diagnosing and treating illness, preventing disease, and maintaining or improving the general health of inmates. The case management model followed by Cermak involves developing a positive working relationship with correctional staff, establishing a framework by which to assess inmates, and knowing the inmate population's demographics. The evolution of Cermak's Healthy Start Project is traced, and procedures followed to identify needs and develop positive working relationships with correctional facility staff are described.
