A STATE-OF-THE-ART HANDBOOK ON DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION, DIRECTED TO PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND OTHERS WISHING TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE AVOID DRUG USE, IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE BOOK IS BASED ON THE EXPERIENCES OF NUMEROUS PREVENTION PROGRAMS ASSESSED AS PART OF A RESEARCH AND REVIEW PROCESS, AND ON INTERVIEWS WITH LEADERS IN THE FIELD. SIX BASIC DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION STRATEGIES ARE EXAMINED: INFORMATION, AFFECTIVE EDUCATION, PEER AND CROSS-AGE TUTORING AND COUNSELING, LIFE CAREER PLANNING, ALTERNATIVES TO DRUG USE, AND PARENTING AND FAMILY COMMUNICATION. THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW ORGANIZATIONAL MODELS--SCHOOL-BASED, COMMUNITY-BASED, COMMUNITYWIDE, AND MINORITY GROUP--FOR IMPLEMENTING PREVENTION PROGRAMS AND FOR CREATING INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE IS ALSO DISCUSSED. PRINCIPLES OF PROGRAM ORGANIZATION ARE CONSIDERED, INCLUDING NEEDS ASSESSMENT, TRAINING, LEADERSHIP, STAFFING, FUNDING, EVALUATION, PUBLIC RELATIONS, COALITIONS, AND DEALING WITH SCHOOLS. THROUGHOUT THE HANDBOOK, REFERENCES TO ONGOING PREVENTION PROGRAMS ARE USED TO EXEMPLIFY THE STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES UNDER DISCUSSION. IN ADDITION, PROFILES ARE PRESENTED OF THE FOLLOWING THREE PROGRAMS: THE GLOUCESTER EXPERIMENT (GLOUCESTER, MASS.); YOUTH SELF HELP (NEVADA CITY, CALIF.); AND PROJECT PROMISE (WASHOE COUNTY, NEV.). FOOTNOTES, 50 REFERENCES AND A DIRECTORY OF SINGLE STATE AGENCIES ARE PROVIDED.
