A movement toward a cooperative proactive strategy is emerging throughout the computer industry and is the result from a shift currently taking place in user awareness, vendor responsiveness, government cooperation, and activities to develop worldwide standards.
Abstract
During the last decade, access control solutions have been essentially reactive. For example, viruses can be seen as symbolic of the way in which users and vendors have traditionally responded to threats, as well as the way these responses have not been working. Each new virus has created a huge reactive injury to deal with the problem. However, the response has dealt only with the viruses and not with the larger issues. These reactive solutions are no longer sufficient to cope with worldwide technologies and threats. In the future, users, vendors, governments, and groups that set standards will work together so that strategies will be in place to respond to new threats. 19 reference notes
