THIS MONOGRAPH REPORTS A CASE STUDY OF THE INVOLVEMENT OF PARAPROFESSIONALS IN FEDERAL PROBATIONS SERVICES, BASED IN LARGE PART ON A FOUR-YEAR DEMONSTRATION PROJECT IN CHICAGO, (IL).
Abstract
WHILE THIS RESEARCH FOCUSES ON PROBATION OFFICER ASSISTANTS, MUCH OF WHAT IS REPORTED IS RELEVANT TO OTHER PARAPROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS IN WELFARE, CHILDCARE, AND MEDICAL SERVICES. IT DEALS AT LENGTH WITH PREPARATION FOR WORK, SELECTION OF CANDIDATES AND THE NATURE OF THE PARAPROFESSIONALS' WORK ROLES. THE AUTHOR PRESENTS DATA GATHERED FROM INTERVIEWS, SITE VISITS, AND STRUCTURED DIARIES OF THE PARTICIPANTS. THE BOOK CONCLUDES WITH FIVE GENERAL CAREER MODELS ADAPTED TO VARYING NEEDS AND LOCATIONS; AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS, OFFICE ADMINISTRATORS, PARAPROFESSIONALS AND THEIR SUPERVISORS.
