STUDY TO DETERMINE WHETHER DELINQUENT BOYS VIEW THEMSELVES AS DELINQUENTS TO A GREATER EXTENT FOLLOWING ADJUDICATION THAN BEFORE.
Abstract
THE RESEARCH DESIGN EMPLOYED FOR THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION INVOLVED A LONGITUDINAL, 'BEFORE-AFTER' COMPARISON OF THE SAME GROUP OF SUBJECTS. THE SELF CONCEPT MEASURES OF A GROUP OF BOYS APPEARING IN JUVENILE COURTS IN MADISON AND MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN FOR THE FIRST TIME WERE COMPARED BEFORE AND AFTER ADJUDICATION, IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE DEGREE AND DIRECTION OF CHANGE IN THE SELF CONCEPT. MEASURES OF SELF CONCEPT WERE OBTAINED BY MEANS OF QUESTIONNAIRES DEVISED FOR THIS PURPOSE. WITH SOME QUALIFICATIONS THE FINDINGS SUPPORT THE HYPOTHESIS THAT THOSE BOYS ADJUDICATED IN THE JUVENILE COURT WILL BE FOUND TO HAVE ANSWERED MORE SELF CONCEPT ITEMS IN AN UNFAVORABLE AND A DELINQUENT DIRECTION FOLLOWING ADJUDICATION THAN BEFORE.
