PROFILE OF THE TYPES OF OFFENDERS, THEIR VICTIMS, AND THE CRIME SITUATIONS.
Abstract
INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED FROM POLICE REPORTS AND TRANSCRIPTS OF TRIALS FOR RAPE AND ATTEMPTED RAPE IN QUEENSLAND BETWEEN 1957 AND 1967 INCLUSIVE. THREE DIFFERENT CLASSES OF OFFENDERS ARE DESCRIBED - THE 'PACK' OFFENDER (GANG RAPIST), THE 'PAIR' OFFENDER, AND THE 'SOLO' OFFENDER. ALSO CONSIDERED IS THE EXTENT TO WHICH THIS STUDY SUPPORTS OR NEGATES THE VARIOUS THEORIES POPULAR IN QUEENSLAND ABOUT SERIOUS SEXUAL OFFENSES AND OFFENDERS. THESE THEORIES INCLUDED SUCH STATEMENTS AS 'ABORIGINES ARE HIGHLY POTENTIAL RAPISTS' AND 'LONG JAIL SENTENCES CAN DETER POTENTIAL RAPISTS'. THE FIRST OF THESE THEORIES WAS DISPROVED AND THE SECOND ONE WAS UPHELD IN THIS STUDY.
