This video presentation is a panel discussion about using teenagers in crime prevention efforts.
Abstract
A panel of five high school and college age youths and one adult moderator, all of whom were active in youth programs, discussed programs to help keep youngsters out of trouble as well as involving young people in community crime prevention efforts. One of the programs was a required course for students of middle-school age. Another was a voluntary program for youth on an Indian reservation. Regardless of location, most of the programs attempted to teach young people about laws that might influence their lives, help them develop self-esteem, and teach them such skills as time management. All of the speakers emphasized the importance of mentoring and providing positive role models for young people. The speakers discussed ways to recruit youngsters whose families were unwilling or unable to help them become active in wholesome, positive activities. The speakers also emphasized breaking down stereotypes and increasing communication so police and community members could work effectively with young people. The video also includes two public service announcements about stopping juvenile violence. An audience member addressed the matter of spending more and more money on building prisons instead of building more facilities to be used for youth programs.
