FOURTEEN LESSONS PERTAIN TO: POLICE ADMINISTRATION FROM HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL PERSPECTIVES; SYSTEMS APPROACH TO POLICE ADMINISTRATION; BASIC POLICE SUBSYSTEM TASKS (OPERATIONS, ADMINISTRATION, AND AUXILIARY SERVICES); BASIC PRINCIPLES OF POLICE ORGANIZATION; BASIC FUNCTIONS OF POLICE MANAGEMENT (PLANNING, ORGANIZING, STAFFING, DIRECTING, CONTROLLING, AND SYSTEM BUILDING); POLICE CHIEFS; INDIVIDUALS IN POLICE ORGANIZATIONS; GROUPS IN POLICE ORGANIZATIONS; LEADERSHIP IN POLICE ORGANIZATIONS; COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION FLOW; POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND RULES AND REGULATIONS; CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES TO ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT; POLICE ORGANIZATIONAL IMPROVEMENT; AND BASIC ISSUES IN POLICE ADMINISTRATION (OBJECTIVES OF POLICING, MEANS AND ENDS CONTROVERSIES, PUBLIC CONTROL OVER POLICING, DUE PROCESS OF LAW, PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFECTIVENESS, AND THE MANAGEMENT OF DISCRETION). THE USE OF SIX CASE STUDIES INCORPORATED IN THE TEXT IS EXPLAINED.
