MAJOR JUVENILE DELINQUENCY THEORIES PLUS CHANGES IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM RESULTING FROM REFORM MOVEMENTS OF THE 1970'S ARE COVERED IN THIS COMPREHENSIVE TEXT.
Abstract
THIS SERIES OF READINGS, WITH ACCOMPANYING COMMENTARY AND CLASS DISCUSSION QUESTIONS, IS DESIGNED FOR BEGINNING LEVEL COURSES IN CRIMINOLOGY OR SOCIAL WORK. THE SOCIAL LEARNING AND REINFORCEMENT THEORY, THE VARIOUS CULTURAL THEORIES, THE LABELING AND CONFLICT THEORY, AND OTHER MAJOR ATTEMPTS TO EXPLAIN DELINQUENCY ARE EVALUATED. THE EFFECTS OF THE RISE IN DELINQUENCY AMONG RURAL, SUBURBAN, AND AFFLUENT YOUTHS ON THESE THEORIES IS EXAMINED. THE LEGAL SECTIONS EXAMINE THE RESULTS OF THE DUE PROCESS REVOLUTION OF THE 1970'S ON PREADJUDICATION, THE COURT PROCESS, AND JUVENILE DETENTION AND INCARCERATION. OVERVIEWS ARE GIVEN OF MAJOR COURT CASES WHICH HAVE CHANGED THE STATUS OF THE OFFENDER AS WELL AS THE NATURE OF JUVENILE COURT ITSELF. LEGAL CODES RELATING TO JUVENILE DETENTION ARE SUMMARIED FOR THE 50 STATES. THIS SECTION SURVEYS THE PROCESS BY WHICH A JUVENILE MAY BE DETAINED, BAIL CONSIDERATIONS, AND JUDICIAL REVIEW OF DETENTION DECISIONS. THE RIGHTS OF THE JUVENILE AS OBSERVED IN ACTUAL PRACTICE IS THE SUBJECT OF ANOTHER COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW. A SECTION ON STRATEGIES FOR COMMUNITY WORK WITH CHILDREN INVESTIGATES THE PROBLEMS OF THE PROBATION SYSTEM, THE GAMES DELINQUENTS PLAY WITH BOTH COURT PERSONNEL AND FAMILIES, THE HANDLING OF SCHIZOPHRENIC ADOLESCENTS, AND THE HANDLING OF PATHOLOGICALLY AGGRESSIVE YOUTHS. THE PHYSICAL DESIGN OF PROGRAMS IS DISCUSSED AS IS THE QUESTION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS DETENTION PROGRAMS. (GLR)
