This introductory textbook uses a descriptive approach to explain the U.S. correctional system.
Abstract
It discusses the purpose of corrections and the way in which correctional operations relate to our system of government, to sentencing, and to the criminal justice system. Additional chapters cover various aspects of corrections such as jails, community-based corrections, probation, prisons, and parole. Correctional organization and management, the emerging issue of victim assistance, and careers in corrections are also covered. The presentations are built around the sequence in which cases flow through the criminal justice system. Each chapter begins with a list of key terms and an overview, concluding with review questions, a list of additional readings, and notes. Charts, graphs, maps, a glossary, an index, and appendixes presenting the Constitution, organizational and journal lists, the American Correctional Association Declaration of Principles, and related materials are supplied.
