THIS IS AN EFFORT TO ASSIST COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN PLANNING A CURRICULUM IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE, BY EXAMPLE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND.
Abstract
IN 1954, A PROPOSAL FOR A DEGREE PROGRAM IN LAW ENFORCEMENT WAS INSTITUTED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND. CRITICS INSISTED THAT LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL DID NOT NEED FORMAL, ADVANCED EDUCATION. THE PROPONENTS OF THIS PROGRAM REFUTED THE CRITICS. THE PROPOSAL OUTLINED IN DETAIL WHERE TO LOCATE THE SCHOOL IN THE PRESENT PROGRAM AND DELINEATED THE TOTAL CURRICULUM AND THE SPECIAL CURRICULUM AND CATALOG DESCRIPTIONS. CRITERIA AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR INSTRUCTORS WERE DIVIDED INTO CATEGORIES TO DETERMINE HIRING PRIORITIES AND JOB TITLES. THIS PROPOSAL WAS APPROVED BY THE BOARD OF REGENTS ON JUNE 20, 1969.
