This article presents guidelines and techniques for identifying and interviewing possible elderly victims of sexual abuse.
Abstract
The author defines sexual abuse as coercive or deceptive sexual contact with a person against his/her will. A list of possible symptoms in elderly victims of sexual abuse includes genital or urinary irritation, injury, infection, or scarring; phobic behavior; sleep disturbance; mistrust of others; and extreme agitation while being bathed, changed, or examined. The guidelines for interviewing suspected elderly victims of sexual abuse address who should do the interview, location of interviews, and interviewing techniques. The latter encompass rapport- building, screening for sexual abuse, and interviewing elderly persons with speech and language limitations. If an interview reveals that sexual abuse has occurred, professional intervenors should explain options pertinent to the victim's rights and protective measures. Intervenors should provide emotional support to the victim, file all appropriate reports with protective services agencies, arrange for victim medical services, and pursue appropriate legal intervention. 16 references
