THIS MANUAL IS PRESENTED TO ASSIST PANEL MEMBERS IN INTERVIEWING CANDIDATES FOR ENTRY-LEVEL POSITIONS AS POLICE OFFICERS. A STRUCTURED INTERVIEW AND RATING AND SCORING PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
A STRUCTURED INTERVIEW APPROACH IS SUGGESTED AND A BASIC FORMAT IS OUTLINED. TWO VARIATIONS ARE DISCUSSED: (1) THE INTERVIEW CAN OCCUR AFTER THE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN CONDUCTED, AND ITS BASIS WILL BE THE ORGANIZATION OF EVIDENCE; AND (2) THE INTERVIEW CAN OCCUR BEFORE THE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, AND ITS BASIS WILL BE THE PERSONAL HISTORY STATEMENT. THE ORAL INTERVIEW SHOULD EVALUATE SIX DIMENSIONS INCLUDING THE CANDIDATE'S APPEARANCE, DEPENDABILITY, INITIATIVE, SITUATIONAL REASONING ABILITY, AND THE PERSON'S INTERPERSONAL AND ORAL SKILLS. AN INTERVIEW FLOW CHART DEPICTS STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURES FOR INTERVIEWING, AND PREINTERVIEW ACTIVITIES AND INTERVIEW OBJECTIVES ARE ENUMERATED. THE RATING PROCEDURE OBJECTIVES AND THE RATING SCALE FOR THE DIMENSIONS ARE OUTLINED. INCLUDED ARE SAMPLE SUMMARY FORMS, INTERVIEW SCORE SHEETS, AND INTERVIEW SCORE WORKSHEETS. (DAG)
