The American Probation and Parole Association received funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance to provide training and technical assistance to probation and parole professionals on intervening in family violence, and the result of the project was a resource manual.
Abstract
The manual is divided into four modules. The first module, understanding family violence, contains information about child abuse, partner abuse, and elder abuse and also describes a conceptual framework that guides the rest of the manual. The second module, responding to family violence, delineates important areas to be considered in developing programs to intervene with violent offenders. The third module, working with family violence victims and offenders in community corrections agencies, provides specific recommendations for assessing cases, working with victims, supervising offenders and holding them accountable, and providing group intervention programs for offenders. The final module on resources contains information and materials for use in program development and implementation. Besides an extensive reference list of resources for further reading, this module includes information on existing programs, other resources such as national organizations, a summary of assessment instruments, and several sample forms. 58 tables and 11 figures
