STUDY INVESTIGATING DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES AMONG TWO APPROACHES TO AN UNDERSTANDING OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR THROUGH TESTS DESIGNED TO DEFINE AND QUANTIFY THE CONCEPTS EMPHASIZED IN THESE TWO APPROACHES.
Abstract
THE IMPULSE, EGO, AND SUPEREGO (IES) TEST PURPORTS TO QUANTIFY THE CONCEPTS IMPULSES, EGO, AND SUPEREGO AND REFLECTED THE ORIENTATION THAT EMPHASIZES THE RELATIVE STRENGTHS OF IMPULSES, EGO, AND SUPEREGO IN UNDERSTANDING AND PREDICTING HUMAN BEHAVIOR. THE GENERAL ANXIETY SCALE FOR CHILDREN (GASC) PURPORTS TO QUANTIFY THE CONCEPT GENERAL ANXIETY AND WAS DERIVED FROM THE FOCUS THAT PLACES EMPHASIS UPON UNDERSTANDING AND PREDICTING HUMAN BEHAVIOR FROM THE KNOWLEDGE OF A SUBJECT'S LEVEL OF ANXIETY, I.E., HIGH ANXIETY OR LOW ANXIETY. IN THIS INVESTIGATION, THESE CONCEPTS WERE RELATED THROUGH AND BY THE RESPONSES OF MALE ADOLESCENT DELINQUENTS TO THE TWO TESTS THAT REPRESENT THESE TWO DIFFERENT FOCI WITHIN PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY OF PERSONALITY. THE DOMINANT STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES USED FOR CONTRASTING AND COMPARING THESE RESPONSES WERE THE ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE AND MULTIPLE REGRESSION. DESPITE THE FACT THAT BOTH THE IES TEST AND THE GASC ARE SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT FOCI FOR UNDERSTANDING AND EXPLAINING HUMAN BEHAVIOR, BOTH INSTRUMENTS SEEM TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY INTERRELATED AND TO BE MEASURING SOME OF THE SAME ASPECT OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR. THE CONCEPTS OF THESE TWO ORIENTATIONS INTERACTED SIGNIFICANTLY WITH EACH OTHER, AND IT WAS REVEALED THAT THERE WERE SIGNIFICANT SIMILARITIES AND CORRELATED DIFFERENCES. RATHER THAN THESE TWO FOCI BEING RADICALLY DIFFERENT, AS IT SEEMS, THEY GIVE ADDED DEFINITIONS TO EACH OTHER'S CONCEPTS AND REINFORCEMENT TO EACH OTHER. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
