This article examines rural police agencies' use of a national data center for computer help, management training, and other services.
Abstract
The National Center for Rural Law Enforcement (NCRLE) is part of the Criminal Justice Institute of the University of Arkansas System. It primarily assists police departments serving populations of 25,000 or fewer and sheriff's offices serving 50,000 or fewer, but is available to help all rural law enforcement agencies throughout Arkansas and some in other States. An 800 telephone number allows about 1,500 rural agencies from 49 States to connect to the Internet through NCRLE free of charge. NCRLE also provides technical assistance over the telephone, during short onsite visits, and by providing training courses. The center helps agencies use available Internet services, assists them in evaluating and assessing their technological needs, and helps them obtain grant funds. It provides executive courses free of charge through its Rural Executive Management Institute. The center provides access to a policy manual containing 120 policies applicable to rural sheriff's offices, a detention facility manual, and a dispatcher manual. If the center does not have information that an agency needs, e-mail to all agencies connected to NCRLE may be used to request help.
