This article discusses how one Virginia sheriff's office uses the Internet to snare persons who prey on children online.
Abstract
The Bedford County, VA, fight against Internet victimization of children is waged online, through legislative efforts, and through community education. Aggressive online undercover operations have resulted in the arrest of numerous predators, many being prosecuted federally. New Virginia State laws criminalize certain online activities and increase penalties for infractions of some existing laws. In addition, Bedford County police's Operation Blue Ridge Thunder has taught more than 6,000 citizens the principles of online safety by means of educational materials in stores, banks, and churches, etc.; community service officers; media outreach (billboards, bus placards, public service announcements, and videos); a book written for parents; and religious institution curriculum. The police Safe Surfin' educational program, which has been presented to 10,000 students, features grade-specific school lesson plans; interactive online "safety games" and lessons; messages from sports celebrities; cartoons, coloring books, mascots, shirts, etc.; and Boys and Girls clubs merit programs. The article includes suggestions on how other agencies can start and operate their own programs.
