CONFERENCE REPORT PRESENTS WAYS OF IMPROVING ADMINISTRATION OF INTERMEDIATE TREATMENT AT VARIOUS LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT AND IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES.
Abstract
INTERMEDIATE TREATMENT IS A SOCIAL WORK CONCEPT THAT CAME TO BIRTH IN ENGLAND AFTER PASSAGE OF THE CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS ACT IN 1969. IT IS A COURT ORDERED PROCESS FOR YOUNGSTERS NEEDING MORE THAN FAMILY SUPERVISION, BUT NOT FORMAL PROBATION. INSTITUTIONALIZATION IS AVOIDED WHEREVER POSSIBLE. LENGTH OF TREATMENT VARIES WITH THE INDIVIDUAL, THE GOAL BEING SHORT-TERM CONTACT. CONFERENCE SPEAKERS INCLUDED NATIONAL AND LOCAL EXPERTS IN SOCIAL WORK. THE SUBJECTS COVERED INCLUDED THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF THE INDIVIDUAL CHILD, SHORT-TERM RESIDENTIAL CARE, AND THE COMMUNITY SETTING. PARTICIPANTS AGREED ON THE NEED TO REGULARLY POOL INFORMATION AND PROGRESS ON INTERMEDIATE TREATMENT AND TO REFINE ITS TECHNIQUES OF APPLICATION....BS
