DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION AND OPERATION OF THIS MUNICIPAL PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT IN WHICH ALL FIREMEN AND POLICEMEN ARE CROSS-TRAINED AND PERFORM THE SAME DUTIES.
Abstract
DISCUSSED ARE FIRE AND AMBULANCE OPERATIONS, EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION AND TRAINING, AND THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF A COMBINED POLICE-FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE ADVANTAGE OF SUCH A SYSTEM IS IDENTIFIED AS LOWER OVERALL COSTS DUE TO COMBINED RECORDS, COMMUNICATIONS, AND OFFICE SPACE AND THE MORE EFFICIENT USE OF MANPOWER. DISADVANTAGES INCLUDE THE NEED TO MOTIVATE POLICEMEN AND FIREMEN TO PERFORM OTHER DUTIES AND THE LACK OF FORMAL TRAINING CURRICULAE FOR NEW FIREFIGHTERS, ESPECIALLY IN SMALL TOWNS.
