STUDY EXAMINES THE ATTEMPTS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE BY ADMINISTRATORS IN THE STATE PRISONS TO EMPLOY AFFIRMATIVE ACTION GUIDELINES.
Abstract
THE STUDY HELPED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATORS ABOUT THE RELEVANT LAW AND REGULATIONS ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, AND TO HELP THEM UNDERSTAND LEAA'S AFFIRMATIVE ACTION GUIDELINES. IT ALSO WAS DESIGNED TO ENHANCE MANAGERS' ABILITIES TO PLAN, IMPLEMENT, MEASURE, AND DIRECT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, AS WELL AS TO MONITOR CHANGES IN SYSTEMS WITH RESPECT TO RACIAL BALANCE IN WORK FORCES AND NONDISCRIMINATION WITHIN THE SERVICE POPULATION. IN TERMS OF RESULTS, THE STUDY FOUND THAT NO ADULT STATE SYSTEM HAD ATTAINED THE GOAL OF HAVING AN ETHNIC DISTRIBUTION OF ITS CORRECTIONAL WORK FORCE STAND IN A 70 PERCENT RATIO TO THE ETHNIC DISTRIBUTION OF THE INMATE POPULATION, AND THAT MOST HAD A LONG WAY TO GO.
