Abstract
THE INSTITUTE WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION (ABA) IN 1970 IN RESPONSE TO THE CHIEF JUSTICE'S CALL FOR PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT IN THE COURTS. THE AMERICAN JUDICATURE SOCIETY AND THE INSTITUTE OF JUDICIAL ADMINISTRATION HAVE SINCE JOINED THE ABA AS SPONSORS. THE REPORT INCLUDES A SUMMARY OF THE BACKGROUND, PURPOSES, AND PROGRAMS OF THE INSTITUTE; A ROSTER OF ITS FACULTY AND STAFF; INFORMATION ON THE CONTENT OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS DURING 1978 AND ON PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAMS; A SUMMARY OF A RESEARCH PROJECT ON MISDEMEANOR COURT MANAGEMENT; AND A FINANCIAL STATEMENT. THE INSTITUTE'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM INCLUDES A 2-YEAR COURT EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT COURSE; ADVANCED AND CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARS ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS; WORKSHOPS DESIGNED TO STRENGTHEN COOPERATION BETWEEN JUDGES AND COURT MANAGERS; SEMINARS ON JUVENILE JUSTICE MANAGEMENT; IN-STATE PROGRAMS TAILORED TO THE NEEDS AND INTERESTS OF SPECIFIC JURISDICATIONS; AND INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL AACTIVITIES (E.G., A 'SEFL-RENEWAL' SEMINAR FOR GRADUATES OF THE COURT EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. THE INSTITUTE ALSO PUBLISHES A JOURNAL ON JUSTICE SYSTEM MANAGEMENT AND SPONSORS AN AWARD FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF COURT ADMINISTRATION. (LKM)
