These 1980 amendments to the Inspector General Act of 1978 establish officers of Inspector General in five additional Federal agencies and departments and contain special provisions relating to the Department of Defense.
Abstract
The office of Inspector General is created within the Department of Defense, Department of Justice, Department of State, Department of the Treasury, and the International Development Cooperation Agency. Individual offices within each agency that are to be transferred to the Inspector General's office are listed. The amendments exempt audits and investigations conducted by the Defense Department's Inspector General from Section 1385 of Title 18, United States Code. The Inspector General of the Defense Department is charged with continuing a study of its audits, investigative, and inspection components, including the findings of a special task force. These activities were initiated by the 1978 Act, and a report is due to the Secretary of Defense and Congress no later than September 30, 1983. For the original act, see NCJ 74891.
