This paper describes the services and initiatives providing housing and accommodations for women who are the victims of domestic assault in Victoria, Australia, as well as current problems in the provision of these services and recommended improvements.
Abstract
The analysis concludes that several actions are needed to improve the availability of housing for these women and their children. Recommended actions include giving priority to expanding the supply of public housing, developing diverse forms of emergency and public housing, ensuring that magistrates are aware of the paramount need to consider the immediate safety of the alleged victim of domestic assault, and training police to enforce laws regarding domestic assault. Additional actions should include distribution of lists of emergency housing options to police and court personnel, increased public education, expansion of shelter space, adequate staff for the telephone referral system, and cooperative strategies to assist women in gaining better access to the private rental market.
