New forms of computer software and hardware that focus on management information, television training, data analysis, and other areas are being used by police agencies to save time, personnel, or both.
Abstract
Unicomp Systems, Inc. plans national distribution of its Police Information System, which can be custom tailored for police agencies, corrections agencies, and the criminal justice system. The United States Customs Agency is using distance learning to provide information and training programs to agency employees throughout the country. Harlequin Limited provides a computer analysis technology to speed the process of analyzing masses of data. Pinpoint has produced a wireless data network to provide automatic vehicle location and mobile data communications services for fleet management, emergency communications, mobile operations automation, and other functions. Spectrum Associates, Inc. is designing an emergency response system able to track cellular telephone calls. Other innovations include the Printrak International system that matches fingerprints with fast accuracy, a contract under which TRW will develop and install an advanced image-based Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS), and the visual data mapping software MapInfo.
