BASED ON DATA FROM A 1968 INMATE RIOT AT THE LEBANON, OHIO, CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION, THE AUTHORS HAVE SOUGHT TO IDENTIFY THOSE INMATE CHARACTERISTICS WHICH INDICATE SUSCEPTIBILITY TO RIOT PARTICIPATION.
Abstract
OLDER INMATES WERE FOUND TO BE LESS LIKELY THAN YOUNGER INMATES TO PARTICIPATE. THOSE INVOLVED IN TREATMENT PROGRAMS WERE ONLY ONE HALF AS LIKELY TO PARTICIPATE AS THOSE WHO WERE NOT, SUGGESTING A SINCERE INTEREST IN REHABILITATION, ACCORDING TO THE AUTHORS. THE INMATE'S HISTORY OF INSTITUTIONAL RULE VIOLATIONS WAS ALSO FOUND TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH PARTICIPATION IN THE RIOT. SINGLE INMATES WERE SLIGHTLY MORE LIKELY TO PARTICIPATE THAN WERE MARRIED INMATES. NO SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIPS WERE FOUND FOR LENGTH OF SENTENCE, AMOUNT OF SENTENCE REMAINING, NATURE OF OFFENSE (PERSON OR PROPERTY), RELIGION, OR EDUCATION.
