Abstract
A PAYROLL SYSTEM WAS DEVISED TO PERMIT MONTHLY PAYMENT ON THE BASIS OF SUPERVISORS' RATINGS OF THE INMATES' PERFORMANCE. FOUR PAY CLASSES WERE KEYED TO THE DIFFICULTY AND RESPONSIBILITY OF THE JOB ASSIGNMENT. IN EVALUATING THE EFFECTS OF THE PROGRAM, THE DATA SHOWED A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE SICK CALL VISITS. DISCIPLINARY REPORT DATA SHOWED LESS PROBLEMS AMONG THOSE IN THE INCENTIVE PAY PROGRAM WHEN COMPARED TO AVERAGE INSTITUTION FIGURES. JOB STABILITY FIGURES SHOWED A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN THE AMOUNT OF JOB CHANGES FOR INMATES IN THE PROGRAM. SOCIALIZING ATTITUDES DID SHOW SOME POSITIVE CHANGES AFTER FOUR MONTHS OF THE PROGRAM BUT NOT OVER THE ENTIRE NINE MONTH PERIOD.
