This chapter discusses the techniques to be used in obtaining information in a motor vehicle collision, as it is related to the vehicle, including identification, description, condition prior to the collision, and effects of the collision.
Abstract
Identification and description methods are described, including uses of identification information such as collision records, supplementary collision investigation, and purposes of vehicle identification other than collision reporting. Methods of identification including obtaining the registration number, owner's name and address, vehicle identification number, coded descriptions, and manufacturer, make, model year are described. Damage classification methods and systems such as amount of damage, standard classification of vehicle damage, damage-location diagrams, vehicle damage scale, and reporting and tabulation requirements are described. Obtaining vehicle data at the scene, including minor collisions, severe collisions, final position of vehicle, identification data, vehicle description, and observing damage to a vehicle are discussed, with a data collection form shown. The nature of technical follow-up examination of vehicles is described including at the scene, follow-up examination, and scope based on what a non-expert would be expected to do. Multiple photo exhibits are included which show the varied damages sustained and each photo is accompanied by a force of impact diagram. In conclusion, vehicle deficiencies are discussed with advice on how to evaluate pre-collision condition of vehicle. A list of reference sources is included at the end of the chapter.
