This paper describes some initiatives on the part of the Home Office to facilitate locating information about the criminal justice system.
Abstract
The demand for improvements in the dissemination of statistical information needs to be viewed in the context of the changes occurring in the criminal justice system. An emphasis on the need for greater interchange of information within the criminal justice system, as demonstrated by a recent program of national and regional conferences, coincided with a review by the Research and Statistics Department of its publications policy. The result has been a series of initiatives to increase the availability and accessibility of statistical information to those working in the criminal justice system and to the public. Several volumes of statistics in addition to the "Criminal Statistics" are published annually: "Judicial Statistics," which describe the work of the Crown Court; "Prison Statistics"; and "Probation Statistics." "Home Office Statistical Bulletins" also are published annually on a range of topics. Several new publications that make the statistics about crime and the operation of the criminal justice system more readily accessible now are available along with sentencing profiles for magistrates' courts. 1 figure and 7 references
