A 1971 STUDY OF YOUTH PROBATION HOSTELS IN ENGLAND AND WALES IS CITED WHICH INDICATES THAT MARRIED COUPLES, SERVING AS WARDEN AND MATRON, COULD HAVE AN INFLUENCE UNLIKE THAT OF PARENTS ON THE RESIDENTS.
Abstract
AT THE TIME OF THE STUDY MOST HOSTEL RESIDENTS WERE AGED LESS THAN 17 YEARS. INDIVIDUAL WARDENS WERE FOUND TO HAVE CHARACTERISTIC PATTERNS OF SUCCESS OR FAILURE, DEPENDING ON WHETHER THE CHILDREN COMPLETED THE HOSTEL PROGRAMS, WITH THEIR CHILDREN. THIS IS INTERPRETED TO INDICATE THAT INDIVIDUAL WARDENS INFLUENCE THE OUTCOMES OF PROBATIONERS IN THEIR CHARGE. ANALYSIS OF THIS DATA AND DATA FROM ATTITUDE QUESTIONNAIRES ADMINISTERED TO THE WARDENS INDICATED THAT SUCCESSFUL WARDENS WERE LIKELY TO BE STRICT, STERN, AND IN AGREEMENT WITH THEIR WIVES ON DISCIPLINARY MATTERS. THIS IS SAID TO BE VERY SIMILAR TO THE TYPE OF FAMILY ASSOCIATED WITH SUCCESS AMONG DELINQUENT PROBATIONERS. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES ARE DISCUSSED.
