DISCUSSION OF CRIME CAUSE FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH INDUSTRIALIZATION AND URBANIZATION IN THE NINETEENTH AND TWENTIETH CENTURIES IN EUROPE, AMERICA, AND JAPAN, AS WELL AS PROSPECTS FOR ASIA.
Abstract
THE CRIME RATE IN JAPAN HAS SHOWN A DOWNWARD OR STABLE TREND SINCE THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO. THIS DEVELOPMENT IS CONTRARY TO WHAT SHOULD BE EXPECTED ACCORDING TO THE PREVAILING HYPOTHESIS ABOUT CRIME AND INDUSTRIALIZATION. THE PAPER CONSIDERS STATISTICS ON JAPANESE CRIME RATES, OFFENDER CHARACTERISTICS, AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC TRENDS IN EXAMINING THIS DEVELOPMENT.
