This article presents a model for developing the Individualized Adult Life Skills System (JALSS), which provides individualized instruction in consumer education, health and recreation, family, and civic skills.
Abstract
The model implemented in the demonstration development of the JAISS was developed and validated over 10 years. It synthesizes in a single system components of staff development and curriculum development, while providing for systematic planning, implementation, and evaluation. Training is provided at the management, mid-management, and line staff levels. A cadre of selected trainees learns how to apply a systems approach to the development of curriculums. This cadre trains other correctional employees in the implementation and evaluation phases. The development of the JALSS began with a needs assessment. The needs in turn were addressed in the projection of an ideal in which goals were set, and the goals were converted into performance objectives. Alternatives for achieving the objectives were then generated and evaluated. The individualized learning approach was found to be most useful for achieving the objectives of the system. Instructional hardware and software were then selected, and instructional modules or lessons were synthesized. Finally, the modules were developed into three tracts: consumer education, health and recreation, and family and civic. Six references are listed.
