DETERMINATION OF BEHAVIORAL AREAS AND PARTICULAR SKILLS NECESSARY FOR SUCCESSFUL CORRECTIONS OFFICERS' JOB PERFORMANCE BASED ON INTERVIEWS WITH STAFF AND DATA ANALYSIS.
Abstract
THIS INFORMATION WAS NEEDED TO DESIGN AND ENACT A COMPREHENSIVE STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. INTERVIEWS WITH EMPLOYEES PROVIDED INFORMATION ON THE KINDS OF SITUATIONS THEY ENCOUNTERED, THE SKILLS NECESSARY FOR EFFECTIVE RESOLUTION OF PROBLEMS PRESENTED, AND THE AREAS OF BEHAVIOR (HANDLING EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, COUNSELING, AND INSTRUCTING) NECESSARY FOR A HIGH STANDARD OF JOB PERFORMANCE. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT AN EFFECTIVE TRAINING PROGRAM COULD BE INSTITUTED AT THREE LEVELS - DEPARTMENT-WIDE, AT EACH FACILITY, AND ON THE JOB. SEE NCJ-012813 FOR THE CURRICULUM DESIGN DEVELOPED BY THIS PROJECT.
