THIS DOCUMENT LISTS INDIAN RESERVATIONS, THEIR POPULATION AND AREA, THE COURT(S) WHICH HAS CRIMINAL JURISDICTION, THE AGENCY WHICH HAS LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSIBILITY, THE TYPE OF JAIL USED, AND IF THERE ARE TRIBAL LIQUOR LAWS.
Abstract
THE UNITED STATES AND/OR INDIAN TRIBES HAVE PRIMARY CRIMINAL AND/OR CIVIL JURISDICTION ON 121 INDIAN RESERVATIONS ASSIGNED ADMINISTRATIVELY TO 60 AGENCIES IN ELEVEN AREAS, OR THE EQUIVALENT. THESE RESERVATIONS, AGENCIES AND AREAS ARE SITUATED IN 23 STATES AND 7 U.S. GOVERNMENT STANDARD REGIONS. THESE 121 RESERVATIONS HAVE AN INDIAN POPULATION OF ABOUT 360,000. THERE ARE ABOUT 111 INDIAN COURTS IN OPERATION. AT THE TIME OF THE REPORT 74 OF THE 293 RECOGNIZED INDIAN RESERVATIONS HAVE TRIBAL ORDINANCES RELATING TO THE SALE, INTRODUCTION, CONSUMPTION AND CONTROL OF INTOXICATING BEVERAGES.
