HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDETERMINATE SENTENCE CONCEPT AND AN ANALYSIS OF CALIFORNIA'S SYSTEM FOR ADMINISTERING SUCH SENTENCES.
Abstract
THE EXPECTATIONS OF PROPONENTS OF THE INDETERMINATE SENTENCE ARE OUTLINED, AS WELL AS THE FLAWS WHICH CRITICS PREDICTED. THE PROCEDURES WHICH THE CALIFORNIA ADULT AUTHORITY EMPLOYS IN REVIEWING INDETERMINATE SENTENCES ARE EXAMINED FROM THE PRE-HEARING STAGE THROUGH PAROLE REVIEW. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE INDETERMINATE SENTENCE HAS NOT RESULTED IN BETTER PRISONS, BETTER ATTITUDES, OR SHORTER TERMS, BUT THAT SUCH SENTENCES HAVE PROTECTED SOCIETY FROM DANGEROUS OFFENDERS.
