This book describes the design and implementation of a model which prepares juveniles for independent living out of foster care, for the management of the transition, and for the followup after transition is achieved.

Abstract

Prior to detailing the model program design, the adolescent population is profiled for the purposes of an independent living program and the range of services required for various categories of youth ('mature youths,' 'immature youths,' and 'youths with handicaps') approaching emancipation. The skills needed by each category all involve self-sufficiency, and the networking and support systems developed are all predominately community-based. The model program design delineates a range of tasks and activities which an agency's life skills training might provide for any adolescent preparing for independent living. The topics include counseling for self-esteem and self-image, daily living skills, personal decisionmaking and communication skills, educational screening and evaluation, jobs and career planning, securing and maintaining employment, and services after discharge from foster, care.
