This article identifies some of the factors that impair the public image of the British police and suggests ways to upgrade this image.
Abstract
The British police have difficulty maintaining a positive image with citizens because police must make snap judgments, some of which will inevitably be wrong and have significant consequences. A negative police image is also fostered by the exercise of authority over citizens and by the frequent display of an unsympathetic attitude. The police image can be improved by selecting recruits with the interpersonal skills required for constructive interaction with citizens and by incorporating the development of social and problemsolving skills in recruit training. Trainer standards should also be revised and upgraded to ensure they can train recruits in community relations. Civilian personnel who contact the public should also be recruited and trained in accordance with job demands for interpersonal skills. 13 references.
