The project described in this report extends the previously funded study "Improving Financial Justice for Victims of Crime" by conducting a victim-centric examination of experiences and outcomes across the demographic variables of victim age, victim gender, and the applicant victim's county of residence.
Abstract
The data collected for the original study included demographic data on victims, including age, gender, and county of residence. The data set also included information on the offense type and sentence disposition linked with each victim's compensation claim. The current supplemental study focuses on the victim characteristics and offense type/sentence disposition. The examination of these variables and relationships includes statistical methods that range from simple frequencies and cross-tabulations. Data sources, quality, and addressing issues are discussed in this report. With the knowledge gained from this study, differences can be seen among groups considered traditionally "especially vulnerable" compared to less vulnerable groups. The analysis of patterns and trends reveals areas where more attention is needed regarding educational efforts in the dissemination of information to victims and resources can be more appropriately allocated according to need.
