This book introduces four basic strategies for the prevention of environmental harm in Australia and provides illustrations for each.
Abstract
An introductory chapter calls for a more expansive conception of environmental crime control that would harness a variety of institutions and influences to achieve improved environmental performance. When functioning properly, these institutions can significantly reduce the necessity for environmental enforcement. Subsequent chapters introduce specific strategies for the improvement of environmental performance. One chapter discusses the provision of information about environmental risks, responsibilities, and opportunities. This strategy is designed to ensure that those entities that pose particular risks to the environment are aware of these risks, their responsibility to take these risks into account in their operations, and how environmental harms can be prevented in their operations. Another chapter addresses the development and characteristics of self-regulatory systems for environmental compliance, followed by a chapter on the commercial influences and products that are environmentally preferable. A chapter describes incentives for exemplary environmental performance, followed by a chapter that profiles hybrid solutions that combine two or more of the other recommended preventive strategies. Subsequent chapters contain brief summaries of specific products, programs, or initiatives that illustrate the strategies proposed. The book concludes with a call for a broader view of environmental regulation.
