After briefly describing the objectives, methodology, and files of a 1981-83 project for improving New York State's correctional classification system, this manual presents coding guides, file formats, coding sheets, and inmate information codes.
Abstract
One research goal was to evaluate three procedures for inmate classification: the Risk Analysis method, Megargee's Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Typology, and Toch's Prison Preference Inventory. A second goal was to devise and test a postdictive model of prison adjustment. A third goal was to develop a new classification scheme for predicting inmate prison adjustment that considers individual and organizational (contextual) factors and interaction between these factor types. Data were collected from 942 volunteer inmates from 10 New York State correctional facilities. The first file contains survey responses from individual inmates, and the second file holds records of inmate medical contacts and diagnoses. Other files contain inmate personality assessment information, data on inmate background variables, and records of offenses and disciplinary action for each inmate.
