Drawing on the findings of demonstration programs in Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), this program brief describes program elements and performance standards and offers step-by-step guidance to help communities develop DARE in their schools.
Abstract
Project DARE is a substance use prevention education program designed to equip children with skills for making decisions, managing stress, and withstanding negative peer pressures to use tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. A description is given of the steps required to develop community consensus to initiate Project DARE, with particular attention to the development of partnerships among education, law enforcement, and other community agencies at the city or town level. Program planning steps described include needs assessment, administrative structure, budgeting, and strategies for obtaining funding. Chapters also cover the selection and training of DARE officers, teaching instruments, the preparation of educational personnel to cooperate with the DARE officer, and organizing school activities. Guidelines are provided for assessing the program, involving the community, maintaining staff skills, evaluating program impact, and moving beyond the first year. Appended supplementary information and forms, 2 exhibits, 39 figures.
